Correspondence, 1867-1868.

Letter book kept by the administrations of Philip H. Sheridan, Joseph Anthony Mower, and Winfield Scott Hancock, while they were commanding generals of the Fifth Military District, U.S. Army, in New Orleans, La.; together with a letter from Harry T. Hays, sheriff of Orleans Parish, the subject of a controversy between Mower and Hancock. Subjects include Reconstruction in Louisiana and Texas, voter registration in these states after the Civil War, and treatment of the freedmen by state and local officials. Persons represented include George Alexander Forsyth, Sheridan's secretary for civil affairs and later aide-de-camp.
